The 2009 Hansgrohe Masters of Water Lifesaving Series was established as an inaugural three- leg series in conjunction with South African Lifesaving to promote development and training, highlighting the need for this voluntary sport in South Africa. The series toured the coast's top beaches during the 2009 summer season, where 24 of South Africa's top lifesaving athletes from across the country were selected to compete in an interactive and fun event. The series started with a splash at Big Bay beach in Cape Town on the 13th of December, continued to ride the waves at Kings beach in Port Elizabeth on the 17th of January, and rolled out on Durban's Battery beach on the 28th of February 2009; just in time for the SA Lifesaving Nationals. Members of the public and lifesaving clubs were also invited to come and compete against the country's best in the beach events. Hansgrohe South Africa has pioneered this event not only to provide another platform for our local athletes to compete in preparation for international events but also as an opportunity to create awareness around this vital service, especially during the summer season. Anthony Mederer, MD of Hansgrohe South Africa commented, "We opened the series up to the locals and invited all interested parties to come and support our athletes. Hansgrohe has a perfect synergy with water and we wanted to promote 'water wise' through our series and teach people how to respect the use thereof."
