The 2008 Hansgrohe SA Surf Lifesaving Championships marked the 75th birthday of Lifesaving Western Province which played host to the national championship at their flagship club in Big Bay, Bloubergstrand.

Lifesaving in South Africa is still a volunteer "sport" and one that is continually under-funded and under acknowledged. In the 75 years since the inception of the organisation an estimated 90,000 lives have been saved and this figure doesn't take into account the families of these survivors whose lives have been affected.

Provincial and national championships are important occasions on the sporting calendar which serve to highlight the depth of commitment that these estimated 16,000 lifesavers across the country, demonstrate throughout the year, which culminate in a physical and at times colourful, display of skill, energy and performance.

"This year we have seen a record number of entries topping 720" commented Mark Dotchin, chairman of Lifesaving Western Province, "and with the support of Hansgrohe who are involved in the Seniors competition and Hang Ten with their support of the Juniors, we are able to showcase the passion and ability of these committed people who are an asset to society."

The Championships took place from Thursday 13 March 2008 to Saturday 15 March 2008. Yet another initiative undertaken by Hansgrohe South Africa.
