Mocke, who is a member of the New Balance Fish Hoek lifesaving club, has been involved in this sport for more than 15 years, having begun as a nipper in 1994 and subsequently progressed into competitive lifesaving. With experience in several international competitions, including World Champs (4 appearances), he is more than equipped to face this supreme test of fitness, endurance and skill.
The Iron Man race tests the 4 main disciplines of lifesaving; surf ski paddling, board paddling, swimming and running. The race begins with a 23km ski, followed by a short transition run of 650m. The athletes then head back into the water for a 3,5km swim, followed by a 4km run on the beach. The final two legs include a 5,5km board paddle and a strenuous 10km run on the beach to the finish line.
Anthony Mederer, Managing Director of Hansgrohe South Africa, commented: “It is a great privilege for us to assist a young athlete, such as Jasper Mocke, to compete on an international level; he will gain invaluable experience which is shared with his lifesaving colleagues back in South Africa. We wish him all the best for the competition and will be cheering him on from the side line.” |
